We are committed to continuous learning and improvement

Innovation, research, evaluation and quality improvement are strong values of Providence Living. They are a core part of the culture at all our care communities, and are values that set us apart from other providers of seniors’ care.

Home for Us

Providence Living’s own social-relational model of care is known as Home for Us. Home for Us guides the care your loved one receives, and is based on the following three principles:

  1. Emotional connections matter most.
  2. Residents direct each moment.
  3. Home is not a place, it’s a feeling.

Our Home for Us care philosophy is woven into the services and daily life activities of all residents, giving the care community a sense of family and home. Home for Us enables residents to focus on fully living their lives rather than focusing on the health-related challenges that brought them to long-term care in the first place.

Home for Us allows our care providers to build daily routine around the skills, abilities and interests that our residents have retained rather than those they may have lost. Our new homes will comprise small-group neighbourhoods that emphasize participation and independence in daily activities, like baking, caring for pets, tending outdoor garden areas, as well as recreational activities.

Many organizations and care providers are working hard to redefine how people living with dementia and other complex health conditions can enjoy meaningful, self-directed lives in care village that feel less like institutions and more like real homes.

Much of this work is characterized by innovatively designed living spaces combined with an approach to care that moves away from task driven, staff-centric styles of care toward a more person-centric, social-relational approach. This new style of care is provided in settings that feel less institutional and more like a real home.

Our work at Providence Living to redefine long-term care is inspired by many pioneering care philosophies, including the Eden Alternative , the Greenhouse Project , The Gentle Persuasive Approach and — more recently — the work of the De Hogeweyk group in the Netherlands.

Each of these care philosophies have advanced our understanding of what it takes to create and nurture a “day well lived” for the residents living in our care homes. Providence Living’s own model of care, Home for Us, takes the best of what these care philosophies offer to create a social-relational model of care that is unique to Providence Living.

Through Home for Us, Providence Living will shift the existing institutional model of care to a social-relational one, where residents direct each moment and live life on their own terms. As an example, this could mean one resident chooses to sleep in in the morning while another chooses to wake up early and feed the birds that live onsite.

By creating care communities that feel like home, Providence Living can help seniors continue living meaningful lives even when they become too frail to live independently.

By innovating, challenging conventions, and most of all, listening long and hard to the real experts — the people living in our care communities and their families — Home for Us will continue to help Providence Living innovate as we expand our care communities across BC.

Centre for Advancing Health Outcomes (formerly known as CHÉOS)

Research can transform practice, policy, and lives. With 25 per cent of Canada’s population set to be seniors by 2030, there is an urgent need for research findings that support the increasingly complex health and social care priorities of our aging population.

To rise to this challenge, Providence Living has formed an innovative research partnership with the Centre for Advancing Health Outcomes (formerly known as CHÉOS) to develop solutions for system-wide improvements in quality of care for seniors. Together, the Centre for Advancing Health Outcomes and Providence Living are dedicated to exploring the questions that matter, working alongside those who live, work, and visit our homes, contributing their irreplaceable knowledge and lived experience.

Learn more about why a cultural shift is needed in long-term care.

Centre for Advancing Health Outcomes is a multidisciplinary health research centre founded to pursue excellence in research through the rigorous evaluation, interpretation, and dissemination of health outcomes information. Bridging the gap between data, research, and care, Centre for Advancing Health Outcomes is a unique collaboration between cross-disciplinary scientists and expert research staff evaluating the effectiveness of health interventions. Established in 1998, the centre is jointly affiliated with the Providence Research Institute and the University of British Columbia (UBC) Faculty of Medicine.

With a commitment to creating stable, effective, and transformative care models, the Centre for Advancing Health Outcomes and Providence Living will formulate and test new ways of thinking and doing within long term care.

To evaluate the effectiveness of changes to policy, care, or practice, the Centre for Advancing Health Outcomes is actively leading a research evaluation program within Providence Living care communities. With our patient-centred care model, we strive to ensure research is validated by people living in our care communities, staff, family, and other caregivers. Put simply, a key component of this research partnership is knowing if what was done was effective, find out if anything was missed in the process, and plan next steps for future innovations in care.

We aim to support a meaningful life for residents, optimal care experiences for family and visitors, and work satisfaction for staff within our homes. Through this unique partnership, the Centre for Advancing Health Outcomes and Providence Living aim to build new knowledge that transforms care on Vancouver Island, BC, and the rest of Canada as we grow into a world-class centre for knowledge creation.
